2006 Archive – Follow the Families

Scientists at this state park created technology that was used to fight U-boats during World War II.

This state park boasts more than 200 years of continuous military history.

Over the years there have been three forts built in this state park. The fort that is currently standing was built between 1839 - 1850.

This state park was the former home of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) and the site of the first United States Coast Guard Academy. Also, this park hosted many of the tall ships for Connecticut’s OPSAIL2000 event.

This state park sits alone on a 50-mile stretch of the Connecticut shore.

An island sits right off shore from this state park. According to legend, a treasure was buried on the island hundreds of years ago by the famous pirate William Kidd.

At the entrance of this park are the Brayton Grist Mill and the Marcy Blacksmith Museum. The Brayton Grist Mill is the last mill in the town and the museum features blacksmithing tools acquired by three generations of the Marcy family. (Note: Bring your walking/hiking shoes.)

When a wolf threatened the local farmers, a young man became a hero when he fought and killed it in its den located at this state park.

The young man later became a war hero and was credited with giving the order “Don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes

The name of this state park derives from two words “great” and “fishing.”

This state park, dubbed "Connecticut's Valley Forge," was the 1778-79 winter encampment site for the Continental Army's Connecticut Brigades under General Huntington and General Parsons.

This park's name honors a young man who became George Washington's most trusted subordinate.

The entrance of this park passes between two miniature block houses, common to frontier forts.

This state park became a Connecticut's first State Archaeological Preserve in 2000.

This state forest features a stone museum that is one of the best examples of Civilian Conservation Corps construction in the state.

During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps created this recreation area which now features a bike trail. This park was also the first state park to become 100 percent handicap accessible.

This state park is the only state park in Hartford County to offer swimming.

This state park features a covered bridge and a restocked trout fishing stream.

Before the bike trail, this state park featured an old railroad track.

In the early 1600s, England suffered a bloody civil war that resulted in Parliament taking control of the government and putting King Charles I to death. After the restoration, the surviving judges were executed except for two who escaped to New Haven. They hid in which state park? (Note: Bring your walking/hiking shoes.)

A cave sits at the top of this state park named for the two judges who hid there from the British troops in 1661.

This state park features Lake Wintergreen, a former water company reservoir.

This park features an overlook that offers panoramic views of New Haven, Long Island Sound and East Rock Park.
