About the Department of Environmental Protection

Established in 1971, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is committed to fulfilling its mission of conserving, protecting and improving the natural resources and environment of the state. DEP’s dedicated staff work in a wide range of areas – from protecting the quality of this state’s air, water and lands to operating a state park and forest system to managing wildlife issues.

The DEP is also committed to motivating Connecticut’s residents – especially children – to learn and care about the environment. Through a wide variety of environmental education programs staff is determined to ensure that No Child is Left Inside®.

The DEP is led by Commissioner Amey Marrella, who was appointed to the position in 2009.
