Chatfield Hollow State Park
Opened in 1933 as Connecticut’s first Civilian Conservation Corps recreation area, Chatfield Hollow State Park is a wonderful place to enjoy fishing, picnicking and hiking. Schreeder Pond, the seven-acre watering hole located near the park’s entrance, is regularly stocked with trout from the state’s fish hatcheries. The pond and forest areas offer plenty of sites to set up a picnic, be it from beachfront tables or wooded groves. An array of named trails take visitors through varying environments, trekking to Indian caves, exploring jagged rocky ledges and meandering by cooling streams winding throughout the park. The reconstructed Paul Wildermann Swamp Walk is a popular attraction that journeys through a vibrant wetland giving people an intimate experience with wetlands habitat, flora and fauna. The Oak Lodge Nature Center is staffed seasonally to provide visitors with a variety of nature programs and information about the park.
