Connecticut Trails Day is part of the annual National Trails Day created by The American Hiking Society in 1993 to increase awareness of outdoor recreation. According to the American Hiking Society, National Trails Day celebrates the approximate 200,000 trails that exist across the country and the countless supporters and volunteers who maintain them. Events on Trails Day take place in 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Canada, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. For the last 16 years it has been coordinated locally by the Connecticut Forest and Park Association (CFPA), the oldest private nonprofit environmental organization in Connecticut. The group is largely responsible for the establishment of many State Parks and Forests, including Bluff Point, Rocky Neck, Sleeping Giant, Sherwood Island, Gillette Castle, People's State Forest and more. The association is a strong and respected advocate for conservation and environmental legislation in Connecticut and established and maintains the 825-mile Blue-Blazed Hiking Trail System. Many of these trails are a part of the annual Trails Day event, which occurs on the first weekend in June. Connecticut has the largest Trails Day celebration in the nation with over 130 hiking, biking, kayaking and equestrian events.
