Kent Falls State Park
The dramatic waterfall is the main feature at Kent Falls State Park, located in the northwest corner of Connecticut. The cool waters of Falls Brook ultimately descend 250 feet over a quarter-mile range, creating breathtaking views that more than 107,000 people visit each year. A recent $1.1 million renovation project affords safer and improved viewing of the falls, which is divided into upper and lower areas. With handicap access, even more visitors can now enjoy views from a new stone terraced area at the base, or traverse the redesigned trails that create spectacular and pleasant hikes to the summit. The cascade flow at Kent is normally heaviest in the spring when the winter snow is melting. However, the falls can be dramatic any time of year, particularly after substantial rainstorms. In the winter, the waterfall becomes a huge ice sculpture while during the fall foliage season, striking leaf colors provide a beautiful backdrop. Kent Falls State Park is one of Connecticut's oldest State Parks and was acquired in 1919 through a gift of 200 acres from the White Memorial Foundation. Additional donated parcels and purchases have increased the size of the park to 307 acres. Besides the falls, there are other attractions at the park including a reproduction covered bridge built in 1974, a well-stocked brook at the base of the falls with excellent trout fishing, and an open field area perfect for a variety of sports and picnicking.
