Lake Waramaug State Park
The pristine waters of Lake Waramaug make this state park a serene setting for a variety of aquatic activities. Named for the famed Native American Chief, Waramaug means “good fishing place.” With largemouth, smallmouth and calico bass; lake and rainbow trout; yellow and white perch; and pickerel, alewives, sunfish and bullheads, this lake is a fabulous spot for local anglers. To explore the approximately 680-acre lake, visitors can rent canoes and kayaks from Memorial Day through Labor Day or bring their own vessels atop their cars. Swimmers will enjoy the sandy beaches along the shore, while others can take in the scenery from picnic tables in wooded groves lining the area. Visitors wishing to spend the night can reserve one of the 77 campsites available at Lake Waramaug. Interpreters are available at the park during the summertime offering nature programs and guided hikes for visitors. Activity at this State Park continues throughout the year, as plenty of sightseers and photographers flock to this portion of western Connecticut to view the amazing fall foliage. In the winter, ice skaters and ice fishermen take advantage of the thick platform that develops on the lake’s surface.
