Mashamoquet Brook State Park
Formerly made up of three different parks, Mashamoquet Brook State Park offers an eclectic variety of activities including swimming, hiking, camping and historic sites such as the Wolf Den cave. The Wolf Den commemorates a famous incident in Connecticut’s colonial history. One snowy evening in 1747, several farmers followed the tracks of one of New England’s last remaining wolves to her lair in a pile of rocks deep in the woods. Young Israel Putnam shot and killed the wolf and was considered a local hero among his fellow farmers since the wolf had preyed upon their farm animals. Putnam went on to become George Washington’s most trusted subordinate and to have the town of Putnam and Putnam Memorial State Park, which commemorates his army’s encampment in Redding, named for him. Mashamoquet State Park features seven miles of hiking trails with two main trails that lead to the Wolf Den. In addition, visitors can camp at two campgrounds and enjoy picnicking, fishing, swimming and field sports.
