Mohawk Mountain State Park

Among Connecticut ski areas, Mohawk Mountain has the greatest number of slopes and trails, the highest elevation, and the highest vertical drop. With 107 skiable acres and the state's largest night-skiing area, it is a perfect destination for winter play. There are areas for snowmobiling and cross country skiing as well, and even ice skating on Mohawk Pond. In the warm weather months, the pond offers launch access for boating and spots for great fishing of trout, bass and sunfish, while the absence of snow allows the ski trails to become broad, airy hiking trails with exceptional views. An observation tower at the mountain summit offers sweeping vistas that include the Catskills to the west, and for those not interested in hiking, the forest road to the lookout is auto-accessible. Hikers will enjoy the extensive blue-blazed trails that are maintained throughout the park and forest, and one of the most unique spots to visit off of the Mohawk Trail is the rare black spruce bog near forest headquarters. A plank boardwalk takes visitors through the unusual environment and leads to two viewing stations with interpretive signs.
