Osbornedale State Park

With an unprecedented 350 acres in the Derby-Ansonia area, Osbornedale State Park is a hilltop oasis of trees and fields in a corridor thick with industry and residential neighborhoods. The state received the land through the will of Frances Osborne Kellogg in 1956. She was the daughter of Wilbur Smith Osborne, a Civil War veteran who operated a variety of businesses on the property from manufacturing hoop skirts and suspenders, to farming the land. Upon her father’s death, Frances took over the businesses with great success, ultimately serving notable roles such as Connecticut’s first female bank director and vice president of the Connecticut Forest and Park Association. Today, the property’s Greek Revival farmhouse is the site of the Osborne Homestead Museum where its restored interior now displays the original contents of the estate, which constitutes a significant collection of antiques and fine arts. The grounds also include the Kellogg Environmental Center, open Tuesday through Saturday and offering workshops, exhibits, nature activities and lectures for the general public as well as programs for teachers and students. Park visitors can also enjoy fishing and skating on Picketts Pond; hiking past stone foundation pits and silver mine remains on the well-maintained Red Trail; or picnicking at the upper pavilion for magnificent views of the Naugatuck River and Ansonia.
