Osbornedale State Park

This hilltop park in the Derby-Ansonia area was the former estate of the Osborne family, whose homestead is now a museum that is traditionally decorated during the holiday season for guests to tour through December 16. The 2007 theme of "The Night Before Christmas" transforms each room into a different scene from the classic poem, and visitors can enjoy programs, lessons and festivities to help put them in the holiday mood. This Greek Revival House, which was built around 1840, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and displays the original contents of the estate. Guided tours of the museum and its formal gardens are available in-season from May through October, with programs and educational workshops often held at the nearby Kellogg Environmental Center. The State received this special estate through the will of Frances Osborne Kellogg in 1956, an accomplished businesswoman and conservationist who was dedicated to preserving land for future generations. Park visitors can thank her for the recreational activities they can enjoy today, including fishing and skating on Picketts Pond; hiking past stone foundation pits and silver mine remains on the well-maintained Red Trail; and picnicking at the upper pavilion that offers magnificent views of the Naugatuck River and Ansonia.
