Rocky Neck State Park
Spanning 710-acres along the eastern Connecticut shore, Rocky Neck State Park is a popular recreation spot for swimming in Long Island Sound, fishing the tidal rivers and salt marshes, and camping overnight in one of over 160 open and wooded sites. At the southern end of the campground is a terrific nature center that is open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Here, park interpreters offer a variety of activities including nature walks through the diverse trails, educational programs, and information on the many displays and exhibits in the building. Visitors also flock to the large stone pavilion, constructed as part of a Federal Emergency Relief Agency Works Progress Administration project. Over 90 percent of the materials used to build the structure came from State Parks and Forests. The pavilion showcases two long dining rooms that are great places to picnic, as well as a second floor restaurant that offers great views of the Sound. Most visitors come to Rocky Neck to enjoy the fabulous beach, with its clear waters and stone-free white sand. The adventurous will hike to Tony's Nose, a rocky ledge sitting 100 feet over the water, or to Baker's Cave, a great place to explore in the southwest corner of the park.
