Sherwood Island State Park

In 1914, the Connecticut State Park Commission purchased five acres of salt marsh from the town of Westport making Sherwood Island the first Connecticut State Park. The state continued to buy land surrounding the property so that the park eventually grew to its ultimate size of 238 acres of beach, wetlands and woodlands. The park is one of only six in Fairfield County (where land is at a true premium) and serves as a mecca for coastal fun. From relaxing on the sandy beaches, to swimming in the cool waters, to fishing in the Sound, to enjoying a picnic in a wooded spot, there is something for everyone. A recent addition to the park is the state's 9/11 Living Memorial, dedicated to Connecticut's residents who perished on September 11, 2001. The memorial features a nine-foot long granite memorial stone, set into a grassed area and oriented so that visitors face towards the Manhattan skyline as they read the inscription. A Nature Center is also under construction at the park to provide walkers, birders, and shell hunters a destination site as well as a permanent place to pick up park maps, birding guides, trail marker and tree guides, and other program information.
