Silver Sands State Park
Featuring a marsh rich in wildlife, visitors to Silver Sands State Park enjoy serene solitude on a half mile of beachfront located between Madison and Westport. The park has a beautiful beach and boardwalk. In the summertime it is heavily inhabited by beach goers for swimming and sunbathing, and in the fall, winter and spring with casual walkers. A short distance off shore sits Charles Island, a State Natural Area Preserve made up of the remains of a glacier over 17,000 years ago. There is an ancient legend that a buried treasure was left on the island by William Kidd, the notorious Captain Kid of pirate legends, before he was arrested for taking the Quedah Merchant ship in 1698. Today, the island is a sanctuary for heron and egrets.
